How to Style Your Engagement Session | Oakes Quarry

This styled shoot is a little different in that it’s not wedding inspiration, but engagement inspiration! I get so many questions about where to do engagement session, what do wear, do you bring props, and on and on.

My biggest recommendation is to tell the story of your relationship. Is there a specific place that’s significant to you and your fiance? Where did you meet? Where did you have your first date? Where did he propose? Where do you guys hang out on the regular? I have done engagement sessions at breweries, ice cream shops, Kroger parking decks, parks… all because those locations were significant to that couple. And let me tell you: I loved the stories it told. So that’s the first thing to consider when thinking about locations.

Now, if you don’t have a special place or it’s just not possible to get to that special place, definitely ask your photographer for recommendations on pretty places with pretty light to shoot. They will have plenty of ideas for you. I loved this location because it’s in the middle of Ohio, but somehow manages to give off strong desert vibes. It’s different and it’s fun and the neutral tones make for super creamy backgrounds.

Another tip is to bring a bouquet! Ask your florist how much extra they would charge for an engagement bouquet. That little pop of color and texture adds so much to the photos! And it’s great bicep training for when you have to carry around that bridal bouquet in a few months. Other fun extras are calligraphed notes & vows. And of course, your fur babies are always welcome.

As far as what to wear, I say wear what feels like you, but don’t be afraid to dress it up. It may seem odd to wear your Sunday best to go walk around a park, but trust me, it’s worth it. And ladies, get with your makeup artist and plan your makeup trial for the same day as your engagement photos!

My last tip? You’re all dressed up and you have the rest of the night free… turn it into a date night! Make reservations at a nice restaurant or hit up your favorite go-to diner. Either way, make it an unforgettable night.
